AIUSA Member Center User Agreement

Welcome to the AIUSA Member Center! By participating in the Member Center, you agree that you have read and will follow the rules and guidelines below. Questions should be directed to membercenter@aiusa.org or via the Contact Us form on this site.

Please take a moment to acquaint yourself with the AIUSA Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct applies to all persons who participate in any human rights activities in the name of AIUSA, including the AIUSA Member Center. In addition, all users agree to respect the Amnesty International core human rights principles as outlined in the Amnesty International global statute. Amnesty international forms a global community of human rights defenders based on the principles of international solidarity, effective action for the individual victim, global coverage, the universality and indivisibility of human rights, impartiality and independence, and democracy and mutual respect.  To foster an environment that encourages civil and fruitful dialogue, AIUSA reserves the right to suspend or terminate membership in this community for anyone violating these rules.

The Member Center is regulated by the rules and etiquette outlined below. All Member Center participants should help encourage the culture they want to see. Should you find a post that falls outside of these guidelines, mark the post as inappropriate for our moderators to review. If you need support or accommodations to fully use the Member Center, please contact membercenter@aiusa.org.

The Rules

  • Discrimination or harassment, as defined by the AIUSA Code of Conduct, will not be tolerated. All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal behavior is strictly prohibited.

  • Practice and uphold non-discrimination, accessibility, participation and inclusion, respect for diversity, and equity between and among all individuals (IDEA).

  • Respect others. Focus on the content of what is shared and not on the people making them. Respectfully challenge thoughts by asking questions but refrain from personal attacks. Extend the benefit of the doubt to newer guests and members; all questions are welcome.

  • Be open to differing perspectives; engage curiosity over judgment.

  • Speak from your own personal experience. Avoid speaking for others by using “we,” “us,” or “them”. Do not assume or expect one person to speak on behalf of an entire group.

  • Assume good intentions and take responsibility for harm you may cause regardless of your intent.

  • Respect the purpose of the Member Center community. Use the community to share successes, challenges, constructive feedback, questions, and goals related to Amnesty International and human rights activism, education, and advocacy. Unless vetted and approved, post only Amnesty-related content, including actions, events and petitions. Do not post calls to action from other organizations. Do not post non-Amnesty fundraising pages, including GoFundMe, Facebook fundraisers, etc. Do not share or offer paid products or services.

  • To protect our nonprofit status under section 501(c)(3), when you’re discussing any election do not refer to any candidate or political party or platform. You can address the issues, but not any politician’s or party’s stance on them.
  • Do not share any sensitive, confidential, or personal information about Amnesty activists, staff, or any Member Center user without their consent.

  • Content that is marked “internal” or “confidential” should not be shared outside of the AIUSA Member Center.

Posting and Discussion Etiquette

  • Start discussions and share resources in the appropriate community. In most cases, it is not appropriate to post the same content across multiple communities. This helps ensure all messages receive the best response by eliminating unnecessary repetition.

  • State concisely and clearly the topic of your comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your post and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.

  • Use threads to respond to a post. This helps others keep track of the conversation. If you have a new topic to discuss, start a new discussion instead of changing the topic through a thread.

  • Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals, not in response to all. Do this by choosing to “reply privately” or “reply to sender”.

  • Do not send administrative messages, such as “remove me from the list,” to the group. Instead, use the web interface to change your notification or email settings. To update your email address, send a message on the Contact Us page.

  • Be mindful of dominating the Member Center with too many posts.

  • Explain and/or spell out acronyms, slang or jargon, and if you aren’t sure what something means, please ask!

  • Whenever possible, be specific about the location and time zones for events, meetings, deadlines, and other time-dependent content.
